These FAQs, segmented by major operational areas, provide a summary of the most commonly asked customer service and technical support questions.

SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATION

Company administrators, once logged into the BirdDog system, can access their administrative options through the Settings button.

No. Included with the service is a daily BirdDog Morning Report. It is emailed each day, can be sent to as few or as many colleagues as you like, and distributions may be set by systems and recipients. Customized data exports can also be built to your specifications and sent at your designated frequency.

A unique (non-shared) email address is required for each BirdDog Morning Report and/or custom data extract recipient.

There are no contracts required for any BirdDog systems except for those clients who are leasing equipment from Coastal Flow.

COMMUNICATIONS OPTIONS

No. While turnkey packages are available which include cellular communications through a major carrier, clients may provide their own carrier and communications data plan.

No. Clients may provide their own communications hardware, but a static IP address is required for BirdDog systems access.

Yes. A site survey is generally recommended to determine the best method of communicating with meters, including cellular, radio, satellite, or a combination of multiple communication protocols.

No. In most cases, low powered, unlicensed radios may be used to share a single modem across multiple meters, resulting in lower upfront equipment and monthly operational costs.

MOBILE ACCESS TO BIRDDOG SYSTEMS

All BirdDog systems may be accessed with most smartphones and tablet computers by accessing the website through each device’s built-in web browser. A BirdDog iOS app for iPhone and iPad is available through the Apple Store as of February 2015 to provide full functionality which has been optimized for these portable platforms.

BIRDDOG SUPPORT

In the event that your meter stops updating, a BirdDog Technical Specialist will work with you to resolve the problem. You can reach the BirdDog support team by calling 800-231-9741 or 281-282-0622. Calls made during non-business hours will receive prompts for how to tag a support request as urgent. A Technical Specialist will diagnose the problem, provide routine updates as resolution is attempted, and will notify you if a field measurement technician will be needed for on-site troubleshooting and/or repair work. Most polling disruptions can be resolved without a site visit.

Log-in and system usage support, including password resets, are available to customers on a 24×7 basis by calling, toll-free, 800-231-9741. During business hours (8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday), your call will be directed to the appropriate technical support or customer service team member.

During non-business hours, callers will be presented with a main menu which includes an option to reach system support and, if appropriate, to mark your message as “urgent” for an expedited response. Non-urgent support calls will be handled/returned during the next business day.

Once received, a BirdDog Technical Specialist will be in contact to obtain more details on the training requirements and to schedule the session.

FLOW COMPUTERS SUPPORTED

The BirdDog Remote Data Retrieval system can interface with nearly all major brands of flow computers and our development team can create custom drivers for any flow computer brands/models not currently supported. CUSTOM REPORTING

First, prepare a list of requirements, including the data fields to be included in the report as well as the required report frequency (e.g., daily, weekly, or monthly). If possible, a sample mockup report in Excel, Word, PDF, or similar standard format should be prepared. The request, including this information and how soon it is needed, should be submitted to the BirdDog support team by sending an email to [email protected]. Once received and processed, you’ll receive a response with the estimated costs and development time.

OTHER DATA SOURCES FOR CAPTURE

Any data captured by or interfaced into a flow computer can be retrieved by BirdDog RDR. Submit your requirements and system information by email to the BirdDog support team at BirdDogS[email protected]. Please note that due to the limited columns in the Morning Report it may be necessary to delete other data fields to accommodate presentation of the supplemental information.

DATA IMPORT; DATA EXTRACTS

The BirdDog development team can create a custom data extract that will seamlessly import into nearly any major accounting software.

The BirdDog Remote Data Retrieval website presents raw, unedited data from the flow computer prior to review by an analyst and final processing through the Flow-Cal Enterprise system or other comparable validation systems.

To the extent that open ports are available, any signal that can be sent to and logged by the flow computer can be polled and displayed on the BirdDog website as an hourly or daily record. Examples include tubing/casing pressure, tank levels, liquid turbine meter output, moisture content, H2S concentrations, etc.

MISCELLANEOUS

No. The data must be stored electronically before communications can be added to permit remote capture. Coastal Flow offers an equipment leasing program which upgrades a chart recorder to a flow computer without investing thousands of upfront dollars.

No. BirdDog is an economical alternative to true SCADA. Unlike SCADA, BirdDog does not permit control of the devices with which it communicates, but it can be a very strong complement to SCADA systems by capturing data for web posting, archiving, and exporting to a centralized SCADA database…and often at significantly lower costs per station than SCADA.
